The development team from Dungeons & Dragons: Eberron Unlimited have put out a great write-up on the addition of Epic Dungeons to the game. An Epic Dungeon is a new difficulty level that has been added to select adventure packs. This a means to ensure extra replayability in adventure packs purchased by players that they may have out-leveled.
Epic difficulty level dungeons can only be entered by players who are level 20 and a member of the team must have also completed the specific dungeon on the Elite difficulty level. In these dungeons the difficulty is of course higher but different twists have been added such as different traps, different monsters to defeat or using familiar objects in different ways. Purple epic items will also drop in these dungeons.
The first epic difficulty dungeons can be found in the Demon Sands adventure pack and the developers are hard at work on more recreations of the epic variety. The variety of loot that has been added is as follows;
Obviously there has to be a reason why you would want to face “fairly eccentric” dungeons besides the nostalgia and challenge. When you play epic dungeons, you’ll be able to work towards three fun things:
- Upgrades of old named items from the adventure pack
- Augmentations on those upgrades to really make them your own
- True Reincarnation options
In many adventure packs there are great named items with awesome abilities…but the items are designed for characters of the same level range as the adventure pack. We felt that it’s a real let down to work hard towards getting a cool named item, only to have to leave it behind as you get higher level and “outgrow it” so to speak. With epic dungeons, you can work towards gathering crafting materials to take that cherished old named item, shove it in the eldritch device with the appropriate ingredients, and be given an EPIC version of that same item. When you upgrade the named item to its epic version, a variety of things can happen to it. Changes can include any, or even multiple, of the following:
- Enhanced versions of the original abilities
- Additional bonuses
- Brand new effects
- Increased base-damage dice
- An opportunity to add a custom effect to the item on top of the changes
The named item you loved as a lower level character lives again in its more powerful level-20-appropriate form! It’s almost like it has been reincarnated. Speaking of reincarnation…Another reward that players can work towards by playing epic difficulty quests are true druidic hearts of wood used for the True Reincarnation feature. This allows you to take a 20th level character and replay them to become even more powerful in their second life (and beyond).Players will have a choice of which features they’d like to work towards, but ultimately there’s no reason they can’t work towards all of them!
When a team concludes an Epic dungeon an epic token will be given to every team member. An NPC named Misty, who can be found outside the Tower of the Twelve, will take epic tokens in exchange for crafting ingredients to augment epic weapons or True Hearts of Wood which are used in the reincarnation process we wrote about last week.
